Proposition 8 is a ballot initiative that overturns California's Supreme Court decision to legalize gay marriage. If passed, it will rewrite the state's constitution to frame marriage exclusively as a union between a man and a woman. Proponents throw around terms like "family values" and "traditional marriage" in support of the initiative. Real eyes realize real lies people. Here are my thoughts:
Being that more than 40% of "traditional marriages" result in divorce paperwork, us heterosexuals lack the credentials to set standards on whom to marry. By this logic, perhaps I should go consult Britney Spears for tips on being a model parent, Michael Jackson on how not to be an abomination, and China on population control.
The fact that kids see janitors everyday at school doesn't compel them to scrub toilets. Teaching them about Napoleon Bonaparte doesn't create a student body jonesing to take over Europe. Personally, I think that teaching about marriage should be done outside the classroom and is the parents' responsibility. However, introducing same-sex marriages into the curriculum is not going to mass-convert children into homosexuals. Being that only 2% of our population is gay, it's not like teachers will be handing out textbooks entitled Do A Dude. I mean, blacks make up 14% of the US population and they only teach about our achievements in February (the shortest month).
Will changing marriage's fundamental framework cause an unraveling of long-standing social conventions? Will it create a slippery slope causing people to challenge the illegality of and/or make special exceptions for polygamy, pedophilia, incest, and bestiality? Frankly, we shouldn't abridge a class' rights simply to avoid having to re-address our ethical stance on other issues. Remember, it wasn't too long ago when laws against interracial marriage were on the books. I think we'll easily be able to put our collective foot down against sister-fucking and sheep-humping.
